Are you prepared for the EES deadline?
The EU Entry/Exit System regulation deadline is rapidly looming on the horizon. Each Schengen member state must implement solutions to manage entry and exit movements across air, land and sea.
With biometric and biographic identification of third-country nationals being a requirement, how will border authorities enhance border security while optimising screening efficiency?
By working with Vision-Box’s Smart Borders solutions, border authorities will be able to:
- Enhance border clearance efficiency by implementing intuitive and secure traveller experiences rooted in solutions designed for ergonomic transit;
- Improve communication and intelligence sharing between all stakeholders, supported by the Seamless Journey Platform®;
- Optimise resources and traveller throughput by orchestrating real-time multi-source data streams thus enhancing decision-making.

The Finnish Border Guard
The Smart Borders Pioneer
Twenty-nine Schengen member states will introduce the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) soon — a landmark initiative set to replace traditional border controls of Third-Country Nationals with fully digital passenger processing and automated biometric data collection. Finland started this process with Vision-Box in 2019, at Helsinki Airport.
Bulgaria EES Land Border
Within the context of the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), Frontex awarded Vision-Box a trial to implement an innovative pilot solution project at two land borders in Bulgaria. The Frontex pilot went live in June 2021, in partnership with the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior and the Border Police.
The entire process leveraged identity and biometrics tokenisation to digitise the operation. Together with touchless fingerprint sensors for combined verification against the EU EES biometric back-end systems, facial recognition biometrics offered the highest level of convenience for traveller identity proofing.

Every day thousands of people enter the EU with border guards working around the clock to protect borders and national security. In 2019 alone, consulate member states processed almost 17 million applications for short-stay visas to the Schengen area submitted by non-EU citizens. Of the 446.8 million people living in the EU, 20.9 million (4.7%) are non-EU citizens.

Crossing borders often brings longer wait times, challenges in managing immigration, and security risks. That's why the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) is raising the bar for border security.
